just look up this look up even on claimant line if you had that photograph you will find there are five of a literal unemployment line these are taken by dorothea lange who’s a famous photographer before and after a great depression choose the one that you find the most interesting for your purposes I’m just going to pick on this one to show you that you can look at a larger version all right for titles just give me the first four words don’t give me the all of this right you can use that information to clarify or to contextualise the photograph in the introduction or to refer to your analysis that’s fine but I don’t need that as the whole title you also have here if you go back to the smaller photograph wary 1938 so we’re looking at towards the end of the Great Depression when unemployment doesn’t begin until almost right before our entrance into World War two so find your photos there um one thing that can be tricky if you chose the unemployment I’m sorry chassis homeless man like Hooverville is going to be a more productive term for you these were the homeless camps that started right at the beginning of the Great Depression and it became sort of um informal as we call them a living space so people build shacks basically in public areas and lived there for a long periods of time so you can see those you may find something with homeless but the Hoover builds are going to be more productive homeless man’s Bureau right that might it help you up you could think about these things to you if you want it but these are more like um on the shelter’s that they’re run by so find your photo you have a discussion board post which is forcing you to analyze this photograph it’s due by Sunday and this is just to help you do the work that you need to do so here you go for that task summarize it and then you want to start thinking about based on what I see here do I have a similar reading on unemployment or a different reading on unemployment and doing this work is going to get you prepared to think about essentially the purpose of this essay right the purpose of this essay to is now to think about what do we learn about the American experience of economic difficulty of those photographs specifically American American experience of economic difficulty through the topic of fear topics of your photo unemployment homelessness food insecurity um being a migrant worker being an undocumented migrant worker farming whatever you chose right so what do we learn about these things based on these two photographs and the tasks now that you have two photographs in play is you’re comparing or contrasting you could do both but I’m perfectly fine with doing one or the other so in doing one or the other which is I’m going to model for you you are essentially going to be writing me a photo a thesis that encapsulate whether there’s an overarching similarity or a difference I’m showing you a thesis of difference because the model in the textbook looking at Bermudez and the migrant mother that’s offering you a thesis of similarity so you can that model now is exactly what you want to do from start to finish now what it says but what it does and so now i’m going to show you what a thesis would look like if you felt like the photographs showed you very two different messages now obviously there are different time periods so your thesis to you don’t want it to be obvious well one is of the current moment and the other is of the depression that’s a thesis I don’t need to read the rest of that paper for me to know that I can just look at the pictures and no those are different times so rather if you want to talk about difference then what’s the different message from those different times right or what’s the different message that we get thinking about economic difficulty over the centuries so I gave you fake theses to start with using the photographic elements of try to keep the list of elements the same so framing for each photograph angle distance lighting color if one of the photographs one of the elements is just so striking you can’t ignore it and it’s not as important in the other one that’s fine but you want to keep us much uniformity as you can so photograph ER for tom sorry photographer one offers us a message whatever of hope and unemployment well photographer two offers us a message of and I’m giving you some filler here hopelessness about unemployment so it’s nice about this structure is it sets up sections which we call in comp language this is a block structure for compare and contrast and I want to highly highly highly recommend the block structure because it’s way easier to control if you try to talk about both photographs in one paragraph I thought this is I meant for eight years and I’ve never had anybody do that well so it’s not impossible it just requires a level of focus and control that can be difficult to have at the stage in your writing life so what you don’t want to do is write a page long paragraph rambling about both photographs use of framing that’s a bad move rather you want those very focused obviously we’re relevant obviously part of a unified argument paragraphs and it’s just easier to do that if you separate out your analyses so this sets us up to start with section one which I suggest should be about the modern photograph from your essay one that’s you up to have paragraphs about each of the elements framing angle distance color lighting you want to begin you don’t have to begin with this sentence section one took her to this rather you’re just going to make sure each of these paragraphs establishes how the hope is emerging so what what in the framing gives us hope what in the angle distance gives us hope when in the color gives us hope and the model shows you how to do that the model offers a block structure as well this could be where you’re just directly lifting from your essay 1 and that is fine it is not cheating probably oh you’re going to have to do some altering so for example you’re going to want to dish paragraphs that don’t talk about hope or you may want to rethink three of your paragraphs if only one of them talked about how well did the others could they be reworked so they talked about hope right so that you have a more coherent unified read of the photograph then you can look to the PDF of the chapter chapter 10 transition one to two sentences from one photograph to another in the model it just gives you a really nice simple model nice simple example look at that and do what it does you don’t need a big lengthy transition into it then you’re in your section 2 and this is where now it’s new analysis of the second photograph right so this is all new section of the paper if the other section is about to pages long you want kind of mirror and length for the second so another two pages what is really important for the second section is that you must have transitions that remind that recall section one so using transitional phrases or signposts right this mirror structure is going to help but it’s not enough you want to have phrases like this unlike the hopeful portrait in unemployment line in Florida that’s going right back to this paragraph which is on page one of the paper now you’re on page three photographer to uses framing blood buh-buh-buh to do that or angle and distance play a very different role from that of Evans photograph this is mel evans unemployment photograph let’s say as Lange uses the two elements Lange is now our Great Depression photographer so you don’t have to just always have these sort of introductory phrases you can also state the transition often though you’re writing what we call complex sentences sentences that are linked by subordinate conjunctions like ads so that’s ke transitions there it can be enough just to have these statements can be enough because you’re focused on hope you have this mirror of structure in your section so you don’t need to transition more necessarily you certainly can if you want as you move through your analysis or maybe doing a transitional signpost at the beginning in the end up to you but at a minimum you have to do this to really be successful and then obviously your conclusion recapping oh you can’t think what we learned from those photographs about the American experience of economic difficulty you can see larger significance simple summary those are the two most common and useful picture paragraphs make sure you can textual eyes both photographs see the texts look model tekspek does a great job of it walking you through it’s a lengthy intro you probably don’t need to be that long because my grandmother is a very famous photograph and you are going to choose that one so you don’t need that much explication on the Great Depression photo but it shows you nicely how to contextualize the overall topic and then move into introducing each photo and then moving into the feast asst so you’re interesting conclusions are going to be very different CSIS different but the body one part of it it could very well be finished may have two pages already done so that the task of si tu typically people do better on SI 2 because they’ve had time to kind of rethink if they didn’t do that well they’ve been able to revise or you know if they did well then they already kind of get it and you get another chance to prove that you already get it so well that is lovely SI tita I say one tends to be much harder for folks if you’re still low concerned about photographic analysis look over the video i posted about two weeks ago about analyzing photos ask me some specific questions about your photographs that’s not cheating I think this is what I’m seeing with the framing does that make sense to you right um just emailing me like I don’t get it or I’m confused that doesn’t I can’t I can’t help you because they’re not having a face-to-face conversation I would ask the questions with what’s confusing I’ve have to email you back what’s confusing and then we’re not email constantly it’s just going to waste your time so try to give me very specific questions or very specific things to look at but in doing that I can I promise I’ll make things clearer I’ve also got you a list of things here as they should do just to help Lisa statements to avoid because they’re obvious right you want to make me encourage me to read your paper not just say hey I already nota based on that there are two different photographs that they’re going to have similarities and differences or do you know that these photographs are poverty by looking at them so you want to offer me and thesis where it isn’t clear to me based on photographs I have to lead what you have to say to be persuaded it’s longer this time you’re aiming for five to six pages again you’ve already got some of it down so that’s great make sure you get in those concrete details from the photographs you want to make sure that you clearly explain those details right and the models from class I chose models from A’s essays from our class for you to look at that too just a great job with detail so bring it in those specifics and then really saying something interesting about those specifics so have a look at those to my let’s do the essay is doing the sixth build in a little time for you to sneak some fun in this fourth of
